Hello Harry,
In a talk about the copper thing in garden this am with a pal who is a
chemist, he stated that copper sulphate and lime mixed together was the famed
bordeaux mixture used as a fungicide. It was, we thought, to be used on
barked plants before leafing out.
Sometime arsenate of lead was added for insects. The entire mixture is still
legal in parts of this country but considered very dangerous for home use.
The danger exists in the product being sold as a copper dust to be mixed with
water and sprayed. There is a problem with breathing all horticultural
chemicals prior to mixing.
Another item from this conversation that is fascinating is from my husband's
years of inner city historical rehab. He says that when a neighbor's tree or
large shrub shades or in any way aggravates you it can be killed with copper
nails. The nails are put into the tree, through the cambium layer and the
heads clipped or carefully nailed under the bark. The tree then dies and the
shade or dropped nuts or whatever is the problem goes away.
He tells me this is common knowledge in city gardens, being quite small,
often narrow, are much affected by their neighbors. I had never heard him
mention this and did not know it happened. One can live a long time and not
know everything.
