Re: serviceberry


I'm guessing that arborea and laevis might be more treelike in form, and
Dirr says they have better tasting berries. I have canadensis, and can
attest that the berries are pretty blah (the birds like them), but I love
the way it looks. It is sort of a shrubby tree, very attractive to me. I
planted three last year and liked them so much that this year I bought two
more. There has been no suckering. (Speaking of which, crabapples drive me
mad with their suckering. I would never plant a flowering crab.)

The fourth type, Xgrandis, is a bit of a conundrum. People don't
seem to agree on what it actually is like. One expert says that nurseries
often mislabel canadensis as Xgrandis.
