Try growing it as a large shrub and mowing around it with the lawn mower.
That stops some of these suckering shrubs. Ours don't don't suckeras they
are in the surrounding fields and cut by a mowing machine. I did not think
of them as a suckering shrub and am glad to know this.

Claire,
I have my service berry planted in the middle of a bed. It is a small tree
with the branches starting about five feet from the ground. In its current
location it is impossible to mow around it so I remove the suckers just by
yanking them and sometimes by yanking and cutting with my hand pruners.

As to the bloom time, I don't remember. I will say that traditionally we go
through two winters in spring, dogwood winter and redbud winter. That makes
me think that they bloom at different times. I will gladly skip both this
spring, if given a choice.
