Thanks for the suggestions. It was I, and I mentioned that it was a narrow
strip, maybe 12" wide. The things need to be quite small. I promised to
try to water until things got established. :-)

You are right that some epimediums are a possibility--rubrum maybe. And
Corydalis is worth a try, altho I note it always roams to some other spot
than where I planted it.

Since the strip is protected, I thought I could safely put in zone 6
plants, possibly even 7. I have some Sarcococca doing very nicely there
now after our mild winter, but there's not nearly enough. Evergreen would
be a plus. I think geranium maculatum or Canadian ginger would be too
large for the strip, but what about European ginger?  It tends to stay
kind of evergreen and is smaller.  Woodruff might be cute but it does get
ratty part of the year and goes completely dormant. I'd like to try
boxwood if there is a teensy cultivar I could use. Other ideas?
