I happen to have a book from our local library's new book shelf - Plants That
Merit Attention Volume II Shrubs (The Garden Club of America, Janet Meakin
Poor & Nancy Peterson Brewster) that lists Acanthopanax sieboldianus
'Variegatus'. Says zone 5, 8' high & wide, common name Five-leaf Aralia. Sun
or shade. Has spines, "greenish white, dioecious flowers in dense, globose
umbels in June-July" and fruit, a black berry. Can be pruned to maintain a
more compact plant.
