[SG] Wade & Gatton/Greensand

Hi Everyone,

For those of you who do not know what greensand is I'll type below a few

things about it that was published in the Wade & Gatton catalog last
year.

Greensand is an organic fertilizer that Wade & Gatton uses in the
planting of Hostas
and most other perennials and plants. They also suggest it for use in
vegetable
gardens. It is mined off the coast of New Jersey.

Greensand is a soil conditioner which binds loose sandy soil, and opens
tight clay
soils. It helps to regulate moisture and temperature in the soil. It
stimulates beneficial
soil organisms, photosynthesis, increases hardiness and resistance to
disease, prolongs
blooms, increases bulb size on bulbous plants and improves bloom color.
Greensand
is non-toxic, long lasting, odorless, does not burn plant roots, and
will not leach away.
It may be applied anytime of the year.

Last year on the AHS Listserve some people when planting would put the
green sand
in the hole before putting in the plant. One lady told me that what she
did is dig
down next to a hosta that was already planted and put some greensand
below the
root zone.

One question I would like to ask is there anyone on this listserve that
lives in the
St Paul, Mpls area that knows of a place or places where the 50 lb bags
of
Greensand can be purchased. I would like to start using greensand and
alfalfa meal
this year. I'm going to make the tea out of the alfalfa meal and then
water the hostas
with it.

Thanks, Vicky Cahanes, New Richmond, WI zone 4
