Regarding your propane tank.  I have one of those unsightly things too.  I
do have a little euonymus growing near mine.  It hasn't exactly thrived,
but is healthy looking and has gotten a little bigger.  I had an enclosure
built around my propane tank; it's made of wide boards, dog-eared at the
top with a simple latch which makes it accessible to the fire department
if, heaven forbid, an emergency occurs.  Within this enclosure I also have
a little storage for spare pots, and a few other odds and ends, so it has
worked out quite nicely.

Regarding the person you mentioned who had tried to start kudzu to cover
his propane tank, I would caution any- and everyone to never start kudzu
anywhere.  It is a terrible curse.
