In a message dated 98-04-12 07:31:37 EDT, you write: << I wish to open a new hosta bed in what is typically midwestern clay. What type of amendments do you recommend? Also fertilizer? How much green sand? Jan - Zone 5, Indiana >> Hi Jan: You probably have the same type of soil as I garden in Indianapolis. Here is a method that has been successful for me: Outline your new bed. Cover it with a 12-12-12 fertilizer. Water. This will kill the grass. Buy as many bales of Pro-Mix to raise the bed about 4" from ground level. Add to the Pro- Mix ample amounts of cow manure, builders'(sharp) sand, perlite, vermiculite, green sand, Osmocote, gypsum, organic peat moss, good top soil, shredded oak leaves and some of the pine bark shredded material that is advertized as an additive rather than a mulch. Fertilize every two weeks with Miracid solution. Use pine straw as a mulch. Stand back and watch your hostas grow! Clyde Crockett z5
