Hi, Carmel. My mother has the same situation (clay and stony clay); I can
tell you what thrives as far as wildflowers go, and the few perennials she
has planted w/o amending the soil:
Fawn Lily (Erythronium spp)
Vernonia altissima
Hosta undulata Erromena
Hosta Love Pat
Hosta Allan P. McConnell
Geranium spp (not Pelargonium)
Scilla siberica
Hepatica acutiloba
Christmas fern
Adiantum peltatum (fern; I think it's called Maidenhair)- no direct sun,
though
Primula polyantha
Certain Campanulae
Raspberries
Strawberries
Meadow Rue
Arisaema Triphyllum
Trillium Grandiflorum
a red Trillium
creeping Euonymus
Rosa spp.
Manna grass
hemerocallis fulva and hybrids
Iris pseudacorus
Podophyllum peltatum
Saggitaria spp. (in wet areas)
dwarf Equisetum
Some, I don't know the names. Hope this helps.
