I have a little spot in the garden behind some rocks where the soil is
REALLY clay. Has anyone had any luck with any perennials that do well
with 5-6 hours of sun and survive bad soil. Maybe with flowers too? I
know I'm taking the lazy way out but it's really hard to get behind those
 rocks...

Hi Carmel:

What about some Phlox divarticata, for spring color, and some Geranium
maculatum also for spring. There are several hostas that thrive in my garden
under the conditions you mention: Gold Standard and Blue Boy and Blue Angel
are three great ones you might try. For ground covers, try the asarums,
Lysimachia nummularia and variegated vincas. Make some pockets in the rocks
and plant some of the dwarf ferns, particularly the crested ones. Also, some
of the stonecrops would look nice with the rocks. Mosses? Yes!

Best advice---Experiment! Try some carexes. They are really neat plants. If
you have some moisture there, then try some of the luzulas.

If you want color, then, of course, Impatiens varieties would be outstanding.
Final thought: Plant only ONE thing--a variegated dwarf hemlock!
