Re: [SG] Magnolia

Forrest:

Are all of your new magnolias blooming? If so, congratulations! Your pink
star magnolias may be Magnolia stellata 'Rosea'. There is another star
magnolia, 'Waterlily', with pink buds that open white. I'm sure there are
other cultivars with pink or pinkish fls., too.

As for the yellow tree, if the buds are yellow and open creamy white, it
may be 'Elizabeth'. Two other possibilities are 'Butterflies' and
'Goldfinch'. These three are large-fl'd M. denudata crosses. There are so
many species of magnolias, and then so many crosses and cultivars, the
mind boggles. If you care about identifying your trees and are unable to
find out what the nursery was selling (they should have records of what
they ordered), you need either a magnolia expert or a book on magnolias. I
think Timber Press has published one. How up to date it is, I don't know.
