Hi Bobbi, Pete & Kay:
Many thanks for the feed back on the "Yellow Flowering Magnolia". I
can ask Brad (the Garden Manager) if he has records from last year.
Brad goes to the Mid-America Horticultural Show in Chicago and buys
from reputable suppliers. My wife and I are retired and are not
exactly starving, but we take gleeful delight in getting "quality
bargains". We bought this Magnolia last Fall for $2.00 along with
lots of others that I mentioned previously. Since my kids come to
Dad's garden to shop, I gave several away. Even gave my neighbor a
large one that I thought was the common big pink. Catherine planted
it in plain view of our yard and it turned out to be a Star when it
bloom a few weeks ago.
Anyway, the name 'Elizabeth' sure rings a bell. It had the nursery
tag on it when bought it but it was gone when Winter was gone so I
was lost for the name. This Magnolia is only about three feet tall,
well branched and has eight or nine flowers on it. It is VERY slow to
open. All the other Magnolias have faded now and the first bud just
opened yesterday on the yellow one. It is a pure yellow with a large
stamen clump in the middle. I am very happy that I did not give this
one away!!!!!
The pink Star had pink buds and when they opened they remained
pinkish but faded to light as they aged. I did notice that the
flowers weren't as full (double looking ) like the white Star
magnolia that the one right close to the nursery area. Now the Hoppa
Crab trees are just ready to burst into color. Winter is okay , but
not my favorite season. However, it is worth it just to get to
Spring!
Thanks to all of your for responding to the "bargain" Magnolias.
Forrest
Kay - Since we live 80 miles from you, would love to visit your
gardens later this season. I have a Dalmatian judging assignment, in
California, the week end of the AHS National so I will miss that.
Wouldn't you know it! When it is in my back yard, I have to be
somewhere else??? Since your known 'Elizabeth' is blooming now (later
than the other types) and this clear yellow "unknown" is just now
oppening, I feel relatively confident that mine is also "Elizabeth".
