Hi Sheryl!
I outline the bed and scatter 12-12-12 granular fertilizer over the grass. The
application should be thick enough so you can see the granules. Water. In two
days the grass will be dead. Make your soil solution. The best thing to start
with is as many bales of Pro-Mix one can afford. Mix in builders sand, 50 lbs.
of green sand, shredded leaves from last fall, organic peat, rotted manure,
some good top soil, shredded pine bark(sold as an additive for soil) and there
it is! I also add some perlite but that isnt really necessary. Cover bed with
pine straw(needles) for best mulch. Plant. Stand back!! (The only thing you
have to careful about, amount-wise, is the sharp sand amounts you add. For one
3.8 bag of Pro-mix, I add about 35 lbs. of sharp sand. DONT use play sand or
even medium grade sand.)
