[SG] Ferns & Things

Dear Deb:

I have had great success with Japanese painted ferns (Athrium
niponicum). Planted in the fall and have come up very full this spring.
They like partial to full shade and evenly moist soils. They have a
wonderful silver gray frond with a wine red backbone. One of my
favorites. The autumn fern (actually spring growing) (Dryopteris
erythrosora) is also another good choice. The fronds come out as red and
then turn a nice green as they mature. Another choice is the ostrich
fern. Can be quite tall but seems to grow about anywhere. Hope this
helps.

    Jim:

I also have used several of the mentioned ground covers but another
one to consider is Sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum). It has great small
white flowers and can tolerate some walking on. It releases a great
smell when walked on. It also spreads rather quickly.

    Need help:

Am looking for a yellow flowering perennial that will stand about
24" to 36" and will only spread about 18". Site gets about 2-4 hours of
sun in the later part of the afternoon, am hoping to have it bloom in
mid to late spring or throughout the summer (seeing as I am not really
being choosey I would take any bloom period at this point). Any ideas?

    To all:

Without sounding trite can I ask that when you post please include
both your city, state location as well as zone for others to be able to
compare to there own locations. I have noticed several postings that I
might be able to respond to but was unsure because I was not sure if
their location was similar to mine.

    Thanks for all the help.
