Dear Forrest,
Potting has advantages, especially if received plant is in full leaf:
1. It allows easier experimentation with locating best site, especially if
pot is buried.
2. It allows restoration of root hairs for better balance between roots and
foliage.
3. It permits better soil mix in confined area for shipped plant to recover
and prosper sooner.
4. When new leaves start to emerge next spring is time enough to get plant
out of pot and give it chance to mesh with soil.
Best, Paul
