Re: [SG] fritillaria imperialis

Dear Nancy
In the last three or four years, a fertilizer has become available around
here call "Holland Bulb Booster" - its composition is 9 - 9 - 6.

Each year about this time (Which in Nova Scotia is when the crocus are
finishing and the first daffodils starting to show colour) for the last 3
years I have spred this stuff on all bulb patches- (Also on things like
Agapanthus, which over winters in the greenhouse here). Just
finished this annual treat again today- Whether it is this
fertilizer or the relatively mild winters we have had the past 3 years, my
bulbs have reversed what was previously an inexorable trend (One year good
flowers- one year sparce, third year leaves, fourth year- untraceable) and
have actually increased in numbers of flowers! Last year, some bunches of
crocus were so crowded I had to split them!

My garden is in heavy shade (1 hour sunlight at high noon in a few spots-
the rest- never more then dappled) once the leaves appear (still at least
6 weeks before that will happen!).

I don't grow Fritillaria- but I wonder if giving them some fertilizer such
as this and at least one more chance might not be worth while? The bulbs
are rather expensive to use as annuals, (at least, around here).

We heard about "new fertilizer experiments" while visiting some Dutch
friends about 4 years ago and went looking for it- Perhaps this is an old
formulation but it was new to us. I sound like the old back pages ads in
comic books don't I- too good to be true! I promise you- no affiliations
with this (or any other!) fertilizer company!

Cheers. Marlene Davis
