Betty,
Like Gene, I plant Rhododendrons high in my clay soil. In fact, I generally
set them on top of the existing grade and build up around them with my
"mix". Usually have to do a bit of retaining with a few rocks or logs, so
that the mix is flat on top when done and not a mound that can be washed
off the rootball in a hard rain or which sheds water off the rootball.
Goal is to keep them continually moist but give them excellent drainage.
