The beetle in the news most likely is the Asian Long Horned Beetle. They
destroy a large range of trees including maples.
Here is a link for those who want to know more.

Subject: +AFs-SG+AF0- Trees in the News
+AD4-As long as we're talking about trees, has anybody heard about the pest
+AD4-supposed to be invading maples? My husband told me about it today, but
+AD4-can't remember when or where he heard of it. I am hoping that it's
just a
+AD4-hoax.
+AD4-
+AD4-The story goes that there is an insect, possibly a beetle, that lays
its
+AD4-eggs on the bark of a maple tree (I don't know if it is said to prefer
any
+AD4-particular species). The eggs hatch and larvae burrow into the trunk,
+AD4-leaving holes that expose the tree to disease and otherwise weaken it,
+AD4-eventually killing it. What I thought was strange was that supposedly
trees
+AD4-were being deliberately destroyed by the acre around New York and other
+AD4-northeastern US areas, because destroying the infected tree kills the
+AD4-larvae, which feed from it only when it is living...this is strange
because
+AD4-I would have expected to hear about it on one of my lists if such
wholesale
+AD4-action was being taken. The insect is from China, and arrived here in
a
+AD4-packing crate, according to the story. So, is any of this true, and if
so,
+AD4-what other information does anyone have?
