WiN and all,

Scabiosa, or pincushion flower blooms in midsummer and continues
until frost if flowers are cut. The stamens protrude beyond the
curved surface of the flower head, hence the name. Plants do not
thrive in hot, humid climates but are easy to grow in cooler regions.
There are 6 mentioned in Sunset Natl Garden book; the s.
atropurpurea and the s. stellata are annuals in all zones; the s.
anthemifoia is the more familiar... with pink or lavender blue blooms.
The s. ochroleuca is a short lived perennial with light yellow
flowers (my favorite)
