One note of, alas, caution. There are lots of spendid lilacs to be had so
the old purple and white vulgaris might be considered a problem in a well
organized garden.
We have both and we are hacking away at them constantly. Also, they sucker
with a passion. The white is especially a traveler. You cannot grow
anything under them as the suckers poke through all summer. Many of the
hybrids do not sucker and spare you this constant chore.
The old white lilac here has grown about twenty feet high and is not a great
plant. Hybrid whites are so beautiful, I reluctantly say that noone should
plant this hydra-rooted monster.
The purples are kept to three or four main trunks, yes trunks they get big.
I know of no way to stop the ceaseless suckering.
