Instead of varying the groundcovers, another possibility is varying the
colors of the flowers of the groundcover. I'm not sure if these plants can
take your heat, but I love mixing different shades of geranium macrorrhizum
(which only vary from a pink-tinged white to pink to fuschia). These are
evergreen, by the way. Anyway, you just have to make sure that different
cultivars bloom at the same time. I discovered, unhappily, that various
kinds of phlox stolonifera flower at different moments.
