Hi; the first thing to remember when combatting earwigs is: NO MULCHING during grwoing
season. They love the cool and damp conditions, and will live and breed under your
mulch. I have even found them living in profusion under the blocks of an old patio - in
the compacted soil. They also proliferate in the hollow stumps left behind after
deadheading rhubarb and other large plants, and anywhere there is old, damp wood (they
will 'follow' termites). I cut my earwig problem in half by replacing damaged wood in
my garage. Too bad there are so many other things they love to eat, which I happen to
grow. I use shredded leaves as a winter mulch and have not found that it provides a
home for earwigs, as long as I get rid of it early enough in the spring.
