Margaret,
Yes slugs survive zone 3 winters... no problem. Even in the years we don't get
a lot of snow like the last 2 winters they survive just fine. They lay
their eggs
I am assuming in the cracks of the earth and they survive even if the adults
don't
but I know from the size of some of the slugs that I see in early spring
that the
adults have survived. I also mulch very heavy in my garden which probably
contributes
to the problem even though I don't put down the mulch until after the earth has
frozen so as not to encourage the mice to make their home there and eat my
Lily bulbs
the slugs still seem to be their as the Hosta and other shade loving plants
break
the earth.
Now keep in mind that these slugs are not the same size as the ones you find
in the
Pacfic North West... I don't think I could handle them that size... but the
ones I have
do enough damage. I have seen them completely destroy a very large bed of
Coleus in
just 1 week ( this happened one year when we where on a holiday and it
rained every
night we where gone, came home and the bed was gone... make my stomach sick)
