Re: clematis tangutica germination
Christopher Grey-Wilson's recently published book Clematis, The Genus
says that C. tangutica, C. serratifolia, and many others of the
Orientalis Group can germinate in 2 or 3 weeks. C. tangutica will
sometimes flower the following year, and the cultivar 'Helios' can
flower within 4 months of sowing.
This is a super book, by the way. Unlike most clematis books (I have
at least three others), it doesn't devote most of the book telling
you how to grow large flowered hybrids with a token small chapter on
species thrown in at the end. This is about species. Exciting! Stiff
stems covered in bright pink suitable for a border, silky leaved
mounds for a rock garden, parsley-leaved plants with large blue bells
growing near Aquilegia jonesii in the Rockies. Who could ever have
guessed at the diversity?
