Re: slugs and worms, earwigs, black vine beetles.....

Valorie, so you use chicken grit instead of sharp sand? I 've been buying a
larger sharp sand called torpedo sand, $2.30 for 50 pounds. Is chicken grit
cheaper than that?

Thanks,
Diann

Hello Jennifer,

Kitty litter is rather soft isn't it? (Don't have experience of it, being
cat-less). So I would assume that chicken grit could be more like it. I
use it to mix with compost to help drainage and alpine growers use it as a
top dressing. Tiny pieces of 'gravel' that are sharp.

However, you will see that Diann does not hold out much hope that it will be
successful in keeping slugs at bay and, as I said, it is only 'somewhat' of
a deterrent.

Beer traps are meant to be good (beer in empty margarine tubs) and the slugs
die happy! It's just a rather yucky mess to face first thing in the
morning.
