Sorry to confuse you, Diann.   I don't use chicken grit - it is called
horticultural grit but in answer to Jennifer's question, I compared it to
chicken grit.   I do use sharp sand in my compost but also use the grit if I
require really good drainage.   As for the price - I garden in the British
Isles, not the USA, and this has probably led to even more confusion -
sorry.
