Hmmm.  4 of my canna (apart from the others, that simply had the holes) were
all chewed up and stripped of chlorophyll. The latter is not a slug trait.
Like you said, it seemed to have happened before the leaves opened, but I'm
not positive about all of it happening then.  I started keeping my eyes on
them and found a small, dun-colored beetle with black spots.  I started
spraying those with insecticidal soap, and haven't seen any new damage.

Hello Diann,

I've had holes like that in my Cannas - I thought that they were caused by
slugs before the leaves unfurled - the leaves certainly had remnants of the
slug-slime on them.   The slugs just munched their way thru the layers of
leaves.

I have found that very sharp grit, about 1/4" to 1/2" deep round the plant
deters slugs to some extent.
