Bobbi, I simply dig up the entire plant. Wash most of the soil off the
roots, and
look for the eyes and then try by hand to separate them off. If they don't
come apart
easily with out breaking them I use an exacto knife and slice through the
roots,
making sure that each part has some root and then replant them.
Normally I keep half the plant for myself and the
current location and divide the other half into 3 pieces. I do this with
all my plants
that won't separate easily once the soil is removed. I have even in the
past when I
have purchased a large pot of say Heuchera with only one crown, I just slice
it down the
center and I have two plants... one for me and one to share with other
gardening friends.
The other thing that I do when I divide any plant using a knife or if I have
exposed some
fresh root I dust with a fungicide and let them heal for awhile before I
replant them. I
don't know if this is necessary but it makes me feel better.
Diann, I have my Astilbe planted with Hosta, Heuchera, Coleus and other
plants that require
water so for me it is not a problem. Also over the years I have purchased
soaker hoses which
are twisted thoughout the beds and all I have to do is bring the water to
the hose and connect
and them I can go onto do the hand watering of the pots and other areas that
don't have
soaker hoses yet.
Best Regards
