This comes as surprise to gardeners. When I first decided to do some serious
alpine gardening and found everything else migrated to those areas, I looked
more closely. For example, I cannot get a good sized healthy sages (salvias)
of any kind in ordinary beds. Bulbs love gravel beds and often there is a
surprise that lives over when it should not be hardy here.
Our driveway is also gravel and it blooms all summer with catchfly, tanacetum
niveum, various viola (corsica the best one), dianthus deltoides, and many
self seeded annuals.
Marge is absolutely right on this subject though it may seem strange to a
new gardener who has been reading books about amended soils and border making.
