Re: august, a bit long

Hello Claire,
Around here I do not get a lot of choice on when I get to play in my own
garden. Does not begin until early to mid-July though as we are into packing
and shipping, visitors here until about July 4th or so, then it begins to
taper off until fall. So, the only time I can work in my garden is July
until about first of September. Not the best of times to be transplanting.
But, you do what you can when you can. Most of the work does get
accomplished in the mornings before the heat gets up. Afternoons are for
grass cutting. We had plenty of rain up until the first of August then
nothing. Got very dry here and we were watering the garden for two weeks in
a row ... then we got some rain last week.
I have been working on good performing perennial for these dog days.
Right now I have the Skullcaps in bloom and want more. Preferably the
natives. I have for species in may garden that bloom from May through
now.... 2 are native. No one seems to use these much and they are so easy to
grow, dependable and nothing bothers them. Lavender-blue is a good color for
blooms in this hot weather.
I am still adding to my collection of Gentiana, especially the ones that
bloom from July on into winter. I can not imagine my garden without the blue
trumpets of gentians from July all the way into December.
I lost one of my major tress in the center of the garden that provided
afternoon shade for one section on the side of the garden... now has a lot
more light than the plants there like at this time of the year. Need to do
some moving, but hate to get into it all. Have to have someplace to move it
all *to* first.......
So, while I am not crazy about hot humid weather, that is mostly the
time I get to garden.
