Joe,
I also am in Zone 7 and Atlanta, GA. area. I grow many different
varieties of hydrangeas of all types. In 1996 we went to the AHS hosta
convention in Portland and traveled to Washington to a nursery where we
bought several hydrangeas. These were barely rooted liners such as what
you bought. These really needed to be grown on in a little larger pot
before planting in the ground. Also, our summers are so hot that the
fall is the best time for planting hydrangeas. I have 3 that were
planted this spring and they are struggling with the heat and drought
although I irrigate regularly. My suggestion is to keep your plant in
the ground now and mulch heavily this fall. I would also suggest in the
future to buy well rooted container plants from a local nursery of whom
I am one. I also grow many varieties of hosta. Give me a call for any
other questions.
