Re: deep shade evergreens

Harry brings up an interesting point. Isn't Washington DC in Zone 7? I am
afraid that boxwood's survivability in zones below 7 would be very iffy. I
remember seeing a fine garden in Louisville (2 hrs south of us) where
there were yards and yards of boxwood hedges that all had to be wrapped up
in burlap to protect them during the winter. And I have seen (I think it
was Korean) boxwood growing at the Chicago Botanic Garden, again in a
sheltered place but still looking very ugly from winter damage. There are
a few very ancient boxwood shrubs growing in sheltered spots around here,
however, so it may become acclimated if it survives.

I would love to try boxwood if I thought it had a prayer of surviving. It
is a beautiful shrub and makes wonderful Xmas greenery too. Does anyone
out there in zone 6 or below grow it successfully? If so, what particular
species and cultivars do you grow?
