Susan,

I too have a white-flowering pieris, planted on the east side of the
house, so it is sheltered. I think our wintertime temps are similar to
yours. My shrub is at least 20 years old and has survived some pretty cold
winters, and your 5-year-old is well established so I wouldn't worry
unless it gets down to -25 or worse (perish the thought!).

I have no info about the hardiness of the red-flowering kind.
