Hi Rich and all the rest of you frozen gardeners,

I'm just reading Rich's post now about Pieris. What is Greer's website??

Also, I ordered two Kalmia latifolia 'Olympic Fire' and two K. l. 'Richard
Jaynes' from Bluestone, as well as a Hydrangea quercifolia and a Magnolia
'Leonard Messel'. Bluestone says they are all zone 4 except for the oakleaf
hydrangea which is zone 5. They are all planted together in my "acid garden"
(our soil is about a pH of 7.5 here) and mulched with pine needles and about
8" of snow right now. I optimistically look forward to seeing them leaf out
in spring so that I can move them to more permanent sites.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I bought a doublefile viburnum from
Bluestone...Viburnum tomentosum 'Mariesi' that they list as zone 4 also, even
though the books I've checked say zone 5. It came as a little stick no more
than 12" tall and now it's a large shrub about 6 or 7 ft tall and wide. Last
summer it bloomed for the 1st time!! It is planted near the foundation
facing northeast. It was this success that gave me the courage to try
Bluestone's other less hardy shrubs this year. We'll see!
