Hello Cynthia,
The Kalmia are hardy, zone 4. Growing them well may be another thing. I
lose every Hydrangea quercifolia that I plant. Usually they make it through
one winter and disappear the next. Good luck. I am also going to try some
of the new magnolias. One called "Royal Star" is doing very well here.
