Re: Animal in wall

Hi Bobbi,

You don't hear any meowing, do you? I once thought I had a squirrel
down in my wall, and I would bang on the wall, hoping to make it feel
uncomfortable enough to leave. Days later, I heard meowing...it was a
cat and it was obviously getting desperate. You probably don't have a
domestic animal because of the loose roof shingles you described. This
cat had gotten into the crawl space via the garage and then fell between
the walls. I had a male friend cut into the wall with a special saw and
the poor thing ran out the opened window. It was horrible and maybe I
shouldn't have shared this story with everyone.

But I guess my point is there is no simple solution to this problem.
You don't want to cut the wall yourself and let loose some crazed
squirrel or rat. I think we were even lucky with a domestic cat.

Many years later we had a racoon down our chimney. After a few days it
was suggested we drop chicken wire with a small amount of stone bundled
into the end and feed it, stone end down, into the chimney. The racoon
left via this makeshift "ladder".

When you have something that is able to get out when it wants, it is
always advised to track its habits (using the noise it makes) and close
the entry at a time of day (or night if nocturnal) when it typically
doesn't make noise. A squirrel will come and go; a rat probably doesn't
need to. If you never hear the noise after securing the entry, you were
successful.

Please let us know what happens.
Sandra
