You really won't know any thing until after the spring of 2004, It sounds as
if the Astilbe have already been dormant long enough to start leaf growth.
For me they come up early in the spring and often are frozen off in a hard
freeze, so have to grow new flush of foliage, if your plants keep the
short-ferny spring foliage for a long time this winter-be thankful, it is
very attractive and colorful.
