I'm in zone 4-5. For three years I've been growing Acer palmatum 'Shana,' which I got from Klehm's Song Sparrow nursery in Avalon, Wis., just across the border from Illinois. It's a dwarf and very red throughout the season. I've wrapped in burlap during the winter and mulched it heavily with pine needles and so far it has done very well. We've had zone 5 winters for the last few years, but last year had no snow cover and woodies had a very hard time.

I am trying to put together an article listing all the Japanese maple cultivars people are growing in Zone 5 (since most are only rated to zone 6 at the most/coldest). If you have any that you have successfully grown for say three-five years, and would like to tell us about it, I will put all the information together and write it up. Then I can post it to the group for everyone's benefit. I thought I might do an article for the Hosta Journal when I'm finished. I am growing about 10 cultivars that I think are pretty hardy in zone 5. I will submit my list to the group and maybe you can comment on any of mine that you also grow, add your own and so on. Also include any information about special care or where they are growing. Thanks, hope this will be a topic some will be interested in. By the
