Subject: Eupatorium aromaticum

Hi Virginia,

Please post this to shadegarden.

Eupatorium aromaticum is the lesser white snakeroot and half the size of Eupatorium altissimum, which is white snakeroot. The newer names are Ageratina aromatica and A. altissima so you might find it under the new names. Rarely available. Protected in some areas. Yes, it spreads from seed just like the other snakeroot species. It is native from eastern Canada to Lousiana and from Florida to western Kentucky. To USDA zone 4. Flowers are white, toothed leaves, about 3 feet high. The common white snakeroot (A. altissima) grows to 6 feet. Sap is reported to be poisonous. A dry woods plant and easy to grow.
This plant and one or more of its synonyms are protected by the U. S. federal government or a state. Listed synonyms are italicized and indented below. Common names are from state and federal lists. Click on a place name to get a complete protected plant list for that location. Due to the poisonous sap the plants got wiped out in many areas by dairy farmers, hence the protective orders. Pres. Lincolns mother died of sap-poisoned milk.
