Hello again:
Since we are talking about a society, let me share what the sansevierias
group did. We have a page at:
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/Vines/5800/index.html Our numbers are
so small that we are strictly "on-line". Our discussion is almost totally
about plants--very little humor, etc. This group is so specialized that it
makes little sense to try to start a formal off-line society. We still have
people ranging from amateur growers like myself to scientists on the list!
I'd like to see us start this new group in a similar way. If we then gain a
1000 or more members, maybe it would then make sense to start a society
complete with journals, etc. Until then, let's just stay on-line. For that
matter, we can always keep an on-line society too.
I have a couple of ways of publicizing us once things are settled in and we
actually have changed our name to whatever.
Is there someone who could write some brief information that could be
included on a webpage? How about some outstanding photographs of
shade-loving plants that either you or I could scan? I don't have enough
time left (before Jan. 12) to create all the material myself. Is there
someone else with webpage creation knowledge? I'll be glad to get us a site
at geocities (free) with 3 megs of space to start. Having a web page which
is then entered in the search engines is one of the critical steps in
growing as a group.
If you would like to see what I have done for the International Geranium
Society which has about 1000 members, go here:
http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/2822/index.html
They manage to publish a quarterly journal for a charge of $12.50 a year!
One goal I have is that if too many people get away from our main
purpose--discussing plants, that 1 or 2 would serve as unofficial monitors
and gently steer the conversation back to plants? Due to expense, I am
forced to leave the hosta-l group so I hope we don't forget about hostas.
(Can't keep joining societies until I am employed fulltime--costs just added
up too much--this makes me very sad. I wish more groups had "student
rates".)
