I would like to hear from experienced gardeners who have succeeded in raising
primulas from seed. I have had very mixed success. Primula japonica was no
trouble. I grow most of the seed (which I get from the American Primula Society
Seed Exchange) under lights in my basement. The temperature is about 65 degrees
and since the only place I have room is the furnace room, there is very little I
can do to get it cooler. Is 65 too high for good germination? The other
problem I have is green mold on the pots. Last year I put a thin layer of fine
sand on the tops of the pots, but it didn't help. I use 4-inch pots and wet the
medium (a mix of spagnum moss, peat moss, vermilulite, and perlite) before
sprinkling on the seeds. Then I wrap each pot in a baggie and seal it with a
twistie. Is this method blocking out too much air? Should primula seeds be
scarified?
Any suggestions would be apprciated.
