Re: [PRIMROSES] Companion plants

Sue - I have to agree with Clyde in that there are so many outstanding
companion plants for hostas. Actually, it would be difficult to tell you a
shade plant that did NOT work with hostas with the possible exception of
Gunnera. Probably a few of my favorites are astilbes (they offer a wonderful
foliage contrast with the light and airy foliage against the boldness of the
hostas), ferns (again, you get fantastic texture contrast) and some of the
grasses, especially some of the Carex and Hakonechloa. (Good list, Clyde!) I
think many have found that shade gardening is quite different that sun
gardening. In the shade, you concentrate much less on the flower, but instead
work to a much greater extent in weaving a tapestry of foliage color and
texture. I find a serenity in shade gardening which for me has never existed
with the sun plants. How do the rest of you feel about this?

Astilbes, begonias, cimicifugas, pulmonarias, some geraniums,
lysimachias, ligularias, carexes, heucheras, some sedums--off the top of my
