Hi all pulmonaria fanciers,
I am writing w/o checking the mildew facts so from memory I think that mildew
does not flourish on wet plants or plants grown in moist soils.
I believe dry soils and dry cool nights cause the problem. We have in these
wintery mountains (snow on the ground since the first week in November and ice
in the drive as well) dry spells every summer. My farm is rural and on well
water. Garden water comes from a cistern collected from metal barn roofs or
from pumping (laborious) from the pond. For this reason very little is
watered here except containers, new arrivals and things I like a whole lot.
We have had a drought each summer now for three years, last summer's being the
worst. If the lack of rain is accompanied by cool evenings those plants that
are susceptible to mildew shrivel up.
Rick G. are you on this new list? Can you confirm this.
Actually my Xmas visitor is 5 years old and I have been playing interactive
Ugly Duckling for two days and may be addlepated. I think the pulmonaria I
have found free of mildew is p. longifolia and it's cultivars. I could
probably try some of the new ones, they seem so interesting. It is really
great to talk with some grown up guys!
