I'm a hobby gardener and don't know much about the harm to trees by
covering the surface roots.
If we have anyone knowledgeable in this area, please let us hear from you.
Perhaps only certain types of trees cannot tolerate this covering....I
don't know. I believe that the tree roots will simply find their way back
up to the top, eventually. But I have raised the soil around Cedar trees,
and Pecan trees, with no harm done. I have raised the soil 5-6" with a
mixture of compost and soil from other locations. I also till in dead
leaves and humus from wooded areas. You may want to arrange a border around
this raised bed to prevent loss of soil from erosion, but I don't. I find
the more "natural" sloped edge more pleasing to me.
