Re: [PRIMROSES] Tree Roots

In a message dated 97-12-31 01:18:41 EST, you write:

<< Since tree roots need to grow under soil, did you mean the
trunk? Or are you referring to those thick roots whose upper surfaces
protrude from the ground close to the tree - if that is what you meant,
please respond! This I need to know - I have received answers about
covering the trunk but not concerning those large, exposed roots, which I
am considering doing to a small extent.

Hi Sheila - I was referring to the tree roots, not the trunk. My
understanding is the soil level under trees can be changed, but it needs to be
done at an ever-so-gradual rate; the roots will adust themselves to additional
soil, but it takes time. I don't recall there being any mention as to exactly
which roots would be affected, but I always assumed (I know, one should never
assume...) that the closer to the surface, the more they would be affected.
Hope I'm making sense here - it's past my bed time.

Have a good new year!
Robyn
