Hi, "Greenhouse."  I had never thought of the ground as getting dry in the
winter, because we have those snow-and-melt cycles, but I'll bet you are
right.  Once a melt occurs, the dry winds would augment evaporation; add
that to the fact that my auriculas were planted close to the foundation
(where the ground doesn't freeze) and I believe you have solved my mystery.
