Robyn is right. When I posted earlier about raised beds, I was referring to
making them some no little distance from the trunks of the trees. For example,
suppose you have one of those huge beeches. There is no way you can plant
anything near the trunk. (Unless you use dynamite.) PLEASE do not encircle the
trunk with a raised bed.
I do think it is ok to plant a raised bed some 10 feet or so from a mulberry
or maple. But then you have to contend with the feeder roots. Here is a
(temporary?) solution:
Put plastic with many little holes in it to cover bottom of hole--heavy
plastic. You then get drainage and SOME protection from the hungry feeders.
