This is the native in zone 4. Shadbush or shadblow is variable in the
species. It can grown as tall narrow tree in a mixed wood or as a shrub in a
field.
Shad is native on my property blooming in the woods very early when there are
no leaves on the trees. Thus, it stands out and is much loved in this area.
If you want to use this rock-hardy shrub be advised it will take any amount of
pruning and makes a fine early cut flower.
If you feed birds or plant shrubs and trees that carry fruit, shad is in that
group.
Some of the selections have larger flowers or pink flowers. And, I should
mention shad is drought tolerant growing on dry slopes and in rocky soils.
