Hippeastrum papilio is an evergreen species from Brazil, and it experiences
relatively little winter-summer temperature variation. It tends to try to
grow year-round in my greenhouse in Indiana.
You can try to withhold water for a period of a month or so, but do not
keep it so dry for a long period that it looses all its foliage. When it
is growing vigorously, water it regularly and fertilize it lightly with a
soluble fertilizer like Peters. Don't use organic fertilizers on wild
species of Hippeastrum, as they have a strong tendency to rot in
cultivation, even without extra help in rotting from decomposing organic
matter around their roots.
When its growth slows, decrease the frequency of watering and omit all
plant food. I would suggest that you try to make the "dormant" period (no
fertilizer, little or no water) to occur in the summer, in hot weather.
Hippeastrum species are tricky. Good luck!
