They're sparrow-sized, and the females are dark grey with white breasts,
and some reddish coloring on the sides of their breasts, above and below
the wings. The males have black heads, otherwise same rough coloring,
although more intense colors. Both have white outer tail feathers that are
very noticeable as they bob into the air or past you. They usually make a
"chip, chip" sound as they fly. They're only here during the winter. They
look neat and tidy, and move briskly. In my herb garden, they "ride" stalks
to a horizontal position, from which they leisurely pig out.  Margaret L
